Just been renewing a few vacuum hoses relating to the carb and came across a
check valve (half black, half white) that seems to be the wrong way round!
It's on the line from the green spherical vacuum reservoir to the inlet
manifold, which also branches off to the choke pull-down diaphragm.
On mine the black end faces the vacuum reservoir and the white end faces the
inlet manifold. This agrees with all the VW literature I've seen so far, but
how can it work? Surely air must be able to move *towards* the inlet
manifold to create the 'vacuum' in the vacuum reservoir. (With my check
valves I can only suck air from the black side and only

air from the
white side.)
Anyone else got a similar car? Which way round is the check valve between
the choke pull-down diaphragm (or the green vacuum reservoir, same
difference) and the inlet manifold? N.B. There's another check valve
nearby, between the inlet manifold and the distributor. I've no quibble with
that one.

***I do have this info someone else on the newsgroup passed on, which was
originally written by Chris Mancuska and has this copyright message:
Copyright Chris Mancuska 2002 - All parts of this document can be freely
distributed, as long as the authors name stays attached to the work.
Part 1 - The Mistake in the Haynes manual and on the bonnet diagram.
On the inlet manifold,
there is a vacuum supply to the advance retard
mechanism, brakes, the choke pulldown unit and
the (carb) three point unit. Part of the system consists of a vacuum
store (a green globe) and two non return
valves, which look like inline fuel filters, and are half black, half
yellow. One of these is usually fitted the
wrong way round, because of a series of mistakes by VAG and Haynes.
Follow the vacuum pipe from the green vacuum store, to a t piece that
goes into the carb, and then to a non return
valve. The YELLOW end should point towards the vacuum store, not (as
shown in Haynes and on the underbonnet diagram)
the black side.A symptom of this is the choke pulldown unit not working, the idle being
very low when the car is

, poor
performance when the engine is

, constant stalling when

, etc
etc....
Go outside and FIX THIS NOW - it's free and takes an instant.

Depending on the engine type this reservoir has two different functions. On some earlier Polo versions it was used for ignition timing control and then it was used for sustaining the operation of the choke vacuum pulldown unit.It is this latter function which is mostly seen now. However if the pulldown unit itself is in good condition and correctly connected to a vacuum supply the choke system will still work tolerably well without the green sphere.Basically its one further complication added to the over complex Pierburg carburetter.E sad da li to znaci da nam je pogresno povezano ili
